Food Chains

Our last science SOL was food chains. The students had so much fun throughout this unit!!

Virginia Standard SOL 3.5
The student will investigate and understand relationships among organisms in aquatic and terrestrial food chains. Key concepts include:
a) producer, consumer, decomposer;
b) herbivore, carnivore, omnivore; and
c) predator and prey.

We started science centers during this unit and they kids did AMAZING! We had five to six rounds and we rotated through them in two or three days.

The first day we watched the brain pop video on food chains....

We then played the game scoot with a partner and practiced putting different aquatic and terrestrial food chain cards together. We switched every sixty seconds and they LOVED this!!!

We also practice how to sort decompser, producer and consumer.

An amazing parent from Miss Lauth's room came from VT to teach the students more about food chains and food webs. This was very fun and allowed the kids to create a food web using yarn and links. They had a blast and it was very interactive!

The wonderful TRT, Alecia made these Aurasma's for us! The kids loved them!

You can learn more about Aurasma here....

They also mastered this app......

AND sorted some more....

It was a very fun, hands on unit and they all did very well on the end assessment!!!!!

Have a great week!!!

Compare and Contrast

Hi Friends! It has almost been a month since my last post! I do apologize and hope to keep posting about your student's projects!!! Last week we discussed how to compare and contrast. We have a great app on our iPad cart at school! It makes it very easy for the kids to upload books and use this new strategy of theirs. Here are a couple examples.

SOL 3.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional text and poetry.
       d) Compare and contrast settings, characters, and events.
