Earths Patterns with Haiku!!!

Haiku Deck is a wonderful app I started having students use last year. It is very easy to pick up and it also has a web version where you can go and look at the projects as well. If you want to see your student's project they are currently working on you can download the app for free or go to the website below and check them out. They all logged in with their Gmail account and password.

For the Past two weeks we have been studying Earths Cycles.

3.8  The student will investigate and understand basic patterns and cycles occurring in nature. Key concepts include

                    a) patterns of natural events such as day and night, seasonal changes, simple phases of                             the moon, and tides

 On Monday the students started to plan their project and what it would say and what kind of pictures they would look for to put in their presentations. I told them that they were going to be teaching their classmates about everything they learned. They are very excited about presenting their projects.

After they had a good plan and an idea of what they were looking for they were off to get their i Pad. I love this app and how quick the kids are able to learn how to navigate it.

Here is our first finished project with many more to come. Lillian did an amazing job and was very focused. Enjoy!

#Government

We began SOL 3.10 today which is....

Virginia Standard SOL 3.10
  The student will recognize the importance of government in the community, Virginia, and the United States of America by...

a)   explaining the purpose of rules and laws;

b)   explaining that the basic purposes of government are to make laws,
       carry out laws, and decide if laws have been broken;

      c)   explaining that government protects the rights and property of
             individuals.

Everyone know what a hashtag is? Well our third graders do! BUT.....if you are unclear, I have provided you with the Oxford English Dictionary's definition.

hashtag n. (on social media web sites and applications) a word or phrase preceded by a hash and used to identify messages relating to a specific topic; (also) the hash symbol itself, when used in this way.

My dear friend Lori had an idea to have the kids hashtag for content areas. AND, because I loved the idea so much we watched an introduction video on government and went to our table groups. In our groups we made hashtag phrases. The goal was to put what we already know on paper.

It was a awesome group activity and they had fun being cool hash-tagging some phrases.

Enjoy your evening!
