Limeades for Learning

Our class needs your help. Sonic does a project called Limeades for learning and all you need to do is go to the site and vote for us everyday until October 29th. Every email is worth 1 vote. If you go to sonic like I do for a Diet Dr. Pepper or whatever you like and ask for a sticker for Limeades for Learning that looks like the one below it is worth 2 votes. AND......you can vote everyday with your email. Sonic funds projects with the most votes every week and those who are not funded they carry their votes over. So hopefully by the end of October we can get somewhere! I have 11 votes on our page just from today with all of my emails and my husbands. =)

Send it to all your family and friends if you can!

Here is the site:  http://www.limeadesforlearning.com/teachers/view/520065/default/1052511

We are starting our second I Pad project tomorrow in Science class. We are going to make presentations on the Sun. =)

Seasons Project and Curriculum Night

Thank you everyone who attended tonight. I really appreciate all of the support you all are giving! Here is the power point if you were not able to attend. I will also send a paper copy home.

To view power point, click on image above.

Our seasons project was so much fun.
SOL 1.7 The student will investigate and understand the relationship of seasonal change and weather to the activities and life processes of plants and animals.

Here is the form the had to fill out to research their season.

They then took this information and made a script. After their script was approved they were able to record. We used Puppet Pals! I can not explain how much I love this app. If you purchase the director's cut it allows you to add characters and pictures. So fun!

Here are the finished products!!! Enjoy!

Read to Someone, Math with Someone and Randomness

I have a few positive management awards I give out every now and again. I make sure each student receives them at least one time and some can get them more than once!

Here is Miles receiving the Super Student award this week! He has been doing such a fabulous job following directions and being a great team member to classmates!

You can not really see it in the picture but....Carly received the "Mrs. Ridgley Thinks you are Super because...." award. She has also been a super great listener the past two weeks.

During Read to Someone and Math with Someone we often have to choose who goes first. With first graders this is a VERY difficult task. This week we discussed the four ways to figure out who will go first.

1. Be the nice guy or gal. This is when you just decide to be a nice friend and let the other person go first. =)

2. Thumb war

3. Paper, Rock, Scissors

4. Eeny, Meany, Miny, Moe

Here they are in action! They really did fabulous!

We finished our Citizenship unit this week! As apart of our VA state standards we teach first graders how to be good citizens for social studies. We drew ourselves on a balloon and we one by one were asked to be on the "Citizen"ship. To join they had to be caught being a good citizen. By Thursday everyone was on board!

Teaching this unit, we watched a few 2 minute clips to demonstrate what they look like.

Donor's Choose

The wonderful Amanda Rawlins who we all miss so much being at our school contacted me with some fabulous news. She found a match code for Donor's Choose. This means that every dollar you donate toward our class project will be matched, dollar for dollar!
The code is ZONKER. Just type it in at checkout time in promotions. You all are fabulous!

Just click the link below. We have $460 to go but if every dollar is matched it could really be only $230!!! We have already used our three I Pads in the room on a Seasons project that we will show off at Curriculum night! I would love to have at least 1 more so I can use them in Reading and Math Daily 5 fairly and of course do many more projects that I am dying to do.

I hope you all had a fabulous week!

Just Right Books

Yesterday we read this book and discussed "just right" books.

Books that are too easy are like shoes that are too small. They just do not help us become better readers.

Books that are too hard are also not right for us and are like shoes that are WAY too big.

We are looking for books that are just right for us like shoes! We also talked about how to find "just right" books. They learned how to use the five finger rule. If they do not know five or more words on a page it is too hard for them. If they know all of the words it is to easy and if they do not know one, or two words than it is JUUUUSTTT RIGGGHTT! =)

They LOVE this lesson and we will read another book about it tomorrow to make sure they know how to pick "just right" books.

Have a lovely evening!

First Week Bliss!

First day of school we had Jitter Juice!!!!!!! Every year the kids love this activity, but this year was different! EVERY student voted that they DID like the Jitter Juice! What a great class!

We started the first day with math! I love routine!

Friday was Gregory's Birthday!!! We had some delicious cupcakes, thanks to his mom Mims!

We started our SOL Investigations by investigating marshmallows! Of course they got to eat them so they could record what they taste like!

YUM!

Our Stamina reached 6 minutes today as we began sitting sitting where we are comfortable! We read The Best Place to Read and then discussed where we like to read at home. We then charted where we could sit at in the classroom. They were able to choose their own spot around the room today and loved it!

A couple brain breaks we have had! So fun!

My sweet boys on their first week of school!

Enjoy your week! We have some fun projects in the works, keep checking back to see what they are up to!!
